The Michael Tierney Scholarship advances BHMA's commitment to education, workforce development, and the future of the builders hardware industry by supporting students pursuing post-secondary education in fields relevant to the industry. Established in honor of Michael Tierney, the scholarship recognizes his more than 30 years of dedicated service to BHMA, including over 20 years as Standards Director, where he led the development and advancement of industry standards that strengthened life safety, security, and product performance. Michael was widely respected for his technical expertise, collaborative leadership, and commitment to excellence. Through this scholarship, BHMA seeks to inspire the next generation of industry professionals to pursue innovation, integrity, and service while carrying forward Michael's enduring legacy.

Michael Tierney Scholarship Criteria 

Selection Criteria 

Scholarship recipients will be selected by a BHMA-appointed Selection Committee based on the following criteria: 

Academic Achievement (30%) 

• Demonstrated academic performance and commitment to education 

• Rigor and relevance of the student’s course of study: engineering, mathematics, physics, STEM, architecture, etc 

Relevance to Industry (25%) 

• Alignment of academic and career goals with the builders hardware, manufacturing, construction, or related industries 

• Demonstrated interest in industry-related fields 

Leadership & Involvement (20%) 

• Evidence of leadership, initiative, or meaningful involvement in school, work, or community activities 

• Strong work ethic and personal responsibility 

Essay Quality & Personal Statement (15%) 

• Clarity, thoughtfulness, and completeness of essay responses 

• Ability to articulate goals, motivation, and future impact 

Overall Application Strength (10%) 

• Completeness of application materials 

• Alignment with the purpose and values of the Michael Tierney Scholarship 

Award Details 

• Up to three scholarships awarded annually 

• Award amount: $3,000 per recipient 

Timeline 

• Applications submitted by August 15th. 

• August 15th – September 1st: Application review 

• Recipients notified after Selection Committee review
