The Michael Tierney Scholarship advances BHMA's commitment to education, workforce development, and the future of the builders hardware industry by supporting students pursuing post-secondary education in fields relevant to the industry. Established in honor of Michael Tierney, the scholarship recognizes his more than 30 years of dedicated service to BHMA, including over 20 years as Standards Director, where he led the development and advancement of industry standards that strengthened life safety, security, and product performance. Michael was widely respected for his technical expertise, collaborative leadership, and commitment to excellence. Through this scholarship, BHMA seeks to inspire the next generation of industry professionals to pursue innovation, integrity, and service while carrying forward Michael's enduring legacy.

Michael Tierney Scholarship Criteria
Selection Criteria
Scholarship recipients will be selected by a BHMA-appointed Selection Committee based on the following criteria:
Academic Achievement (30%)

Rigor and relevance of the student’s course of study: engineering, mathematics, physics, STEM, architecture, etc
Relevance to Industry (25%)

Alignment of academic and career goals with the builders hardware, manufacturing, construction, or related industries
Leadership & Involvement (20%)

Evidence of leadership, initiative, or meaningful involvement in school, work, or community activities
Essay Quality & Personal Statement (15%)
Overall Application Strength (10%)
