With active school shootings occurring at an alarming rate, the best way to keep our students safe and secure has become an issue of top national concern. Classroom locksets accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) allow for safer egress; faster rescues; function in all types of emergencies; and are specifically made with classrooms in mind.
The best classroom lockset allows for:
- A single motion in order to exit. This permits the students to exit the classroom quickly.
- A key in order to unlock the door from the outside. This allows school personnel and first responders to quickly enter the classroom to aid in exiting students quickly.
One of the solutions brought forward was to introduce the use of barricades in classrooms. However, barricades pose a threat to general safety and violate a number of building and life safety codes. Unfortunately, there are regular instances of severe weather alerts, bullying, assault cases and fires which attribute to a more frequent need of a code-complying lockset. Barricades create the opportunity for captive situations to develop.
