2024 IBC and IFC Focus Documents

Bolts / Bolt Locks - New definitions and requirements refined with editorial clarifications of provisions for dead bolts, manual bolts, automatic flush bolts, and constant latching bolts

Key-Operated Locking Devices - Clarification of which exterior doors or main doors are permitted to be locked when a building or space is not occupied

Electrical Locking Systems - Requiring electrical locks in some types of systems to be listed to either UL 294 or UL 1034

Enclosed Elevator Lobbies - Permitting electrically locked exit access doors (locked doors to tenant spaces) where specific requirements are met

Stairway Reentry Release Methods - Revised requirements for unlocking stairway doors on the stair side to allow reentry from the stairway into the building

Multiple Occupant Toilet Facilities - Exception permitting locking of egress doors by authorized personnel

Maneuvering Clearance - Explicitly requires maneuvering clearance in compliance with ICC A117.1 to be provided at doors in the accessible means of egress

Hardware Projections - Clarifications related to projections permitted at the top of door openings

Access Control Systems - Clarification of the I-Code requirements related to egress doors equipped with electrified hardware that controls access/ ingress but does not affect egress

Doors with Panic Hardware - Change that prohibits sensor release electrical locking systems on doors required to have panic hardware

Automatic Operators at Accessible Public Entrances - Clarifications of requirements, and applications related to buildings with mixed occupancies

Doors in Existing Buildings - Updates to IFC requirements affecting hardware projections, door unlatching forces, and door opening force requirements, in alignment with the IBC

Participate in the BHMA® Certification Program by voluntarily submitting a hardware product to independent laboratory testing to confirm that it fully meets the criteria of the appropriate ANSI/BHMA® standard.  This industry-wide certification program does not call for a manufacturer to be a BHMA® member in order to certify its products.
