ANSI/BHMA Standards

ANSI/BHMA standards are the written descriptions and criteria that precisely define the appropriate operation, performance characteristics, physical properties, test values, usage parameters, safety criteria, etc. of specific types of builders hardware products.

BHMA is the only U.S. organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and maintain performance standards for builders hardware. At present there are 31 ANSI/BHMA standards, with several more in development.

The numbering and grading systems referenced in these ANSI/BHMA standards are described below:

BHMA publishes American National Standards for all types of builders hardware using the canvass method. In compliance with the ANSI process of public review, BHMA welcomes and will respond to any comment once a BHMA-developed standard reaches the ANSI canvass stage.
